El Angel nature lodge
Hosteria El Angel (built in 1999) is located in a priviliged area of the North Andes of Ecuador, at the entrance of the friendly village of El Angel (50 m from the "La Vasija" monument). The lodge is at an altitude of aproxim. 3.000 m (9000 feet). The lodge has beautiful gardens and warm social areas.
Hosteria El Angel is an ideal starting point to visit the Paramo of El Angel, famous for its Frailejones plants which are unique to the whole South American continent and with flowers up to 5 m high.
Here you can walk between thousands of "frailejones" (Espeletia Pycnophylla), one of the world's tallest flowers and you will find some of the most stunning and impressive landscapes with many small lakes. If you are lucky, you could even see the Andean condor.
Attractions nearby are: the Paramo del Angel and the voladero lagoon, the grotto of La Paz, a worshipping place for the locals and the extraordinary cemetery of Tulcan with its mystic indian figures, cut in cypress trees. You can also visit small colonial cities where time seems to stand still the valley of Chota with old sugar cane mills and home to Afro-Ecuadorian communities (50% of Ecuador´s world cup soccer team procedes from this valley). Our very own Cotinga lodge located in the nearby cloudforest, perfect base camp to explore the paramo: In this private area you can find different paths and viewpoints. The flora and fauna posseses a high diversity of different species above all bromeliads, orchids, ferns, moss, climbing plants and a lot of endemic trees as well as a big variety of birds. In very remote parts there stille exist pumas, bears, deers and condors. A true paradise for nature lovers. Nearby is a Polylepis forest - paper tree - (Quinoa) called El Colorado due to the red bark of the trees. Chiles volcano and its mountain scenery and foothills. Thermal waters.
